Ukraine Leads World In Weaponized Drone Tech

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Amid its continuing war following Russia’s 2022 invasion, Ukraine has hastily carved out an important role in manufacturing unmanned drone technology.

Autonomous use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) and other technologies to operate with remote, minimal human monitoring. Ukraine’s work on these crucial military Ukraine’s mission to use the advancements in this field to battle Russia’s ongoing attempted takeover has surely helped its recent boost in innovation. Innovations are not limited to aerial drones; companies like DevDroid are developing autonomous gun turrets capable of tracking and engaging targets from a distance.

Areas close to Kyiv have been used as testing locations for the new drones. Vyriy, a domestic startup, is a cutting-edge player in this race. Their drones can identify and follow targets with precision, marking a landmark advancement in the militarization of consumer tech. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said that such advancements are “fundamental” to winning its war with Russia, and said the government would continue to invest in them.

Another Kyiv-based firm, Saker, is using A.I. for commercial purposes like sorting fresh produce, to improve targeting abilities. While these changes offer a tactical advantage, they also raise ethical concerns. The accessibility and cost-effectiveness of such drones, often set up with open-source software and commercial components, pose risks of potential misuse, including by terrorists.

Recent advancements in autonomous drones have drawn global investment. Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt founded D3, a firm investing in battlefield strategies in Ukraine. Such an outpouring of human and financial capital is increasing innovation, permitting Ukrainian companies to outstrip plenty of their international competitors.

While “unmanned” drones still need human guidance for firing, the technology is already progressing further. Swarmer, also a Ukrainian business, is creating systems that allow one person to control multiple drones at once, for both attacks and reconnaissance. Serhii Kupriienko, Swarmer’s founder, says he can already predict drone pilots being able to operate five to 10 drones simultaneously.
