(PatriotSpotlight.org) – In a shock political shift, President Joe Biden said in a statement on Sunday that he would be withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, prompting a flurry of reactions across the political spectrum. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) spoke to CNN to chew over the consequences of Biden’s departure and expressed hope for his party’s future.
He said the decision showed that Biden has acted as a “selfless president” ought to while former President Donald Trump was “selfish”. He also claimed the move, despite being late in the race, was representative of how Biden put the country before his own ambitions.
Biden’s exit leaves the path almost wide open for incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris to head up the Democratic ticket. This may well be a tough move for voters to handle due to Harris’ poor polling with general voters. Swalwell expressed his firm backing for Harris, however, stating that she was more than qualified for the White House given her experiences as VP and as a lawyer.
He appeared to express a degree of alarmism about her opponent, suggesting that Trump could remove “every freedom” in the country, including banning books and forcing people into marriages There is no evidence the Trump campaign supports such extreme measures.
Swalwell’s strong support for Harris’s leadership is not limited to the immediate issue of the Presidential election. He also claimed her win would be key to permitting his party victories across the board including in the House and Senate, which are currently controlled by Republicans.
As Democrats—despite their reservations about her record—seem poised to rally wholesale behind Harris, the GOP is setting themselves up for a fierce election battle. Former President Donald, who is currently leading in most polls, has been vocally critical of both Harris and Biden. Senator JD Vance (R-OH), now Trump’s official running mate, has echoed his boss’ thoughts, slamming the Democrats’ move as “insanely anti-democratic.”
