(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Following his shock resignation from the Presidential race on Sunday, President Joe Biden soon officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democratic Party’s nominee.
On 21 July, following weeks and months of concern over the President’s mental and physical condition, Biden said he had “decided not to accept the nomination”. He did not resign as President, despite avoiding making the announcement via a live press conference, but said he intended to “focus” his efforts on fulfilling his duties until the end of his term in January 2025. Biden said that picking Kamala Harris as his running mate in 2020 was the best decision” he had made and that his party needed to support her in order to win against former President Donald Trump.
Biden’s shock move came after one of his top aides allegedly traveled to Delaware to pen the resignation letter. Mere minutes prior to the announcement, Biden’s staffers were continuing to brief journalists that he would remain in the race. It came after a series of major public missteps, including a NATO press conference in which Biden referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as President Putin, and VP Harris as Donald Trump.
Harris has already begun garnering donations from democrat donors and has said she hopes to “earn” the party’s nomination, although President Biden’s backing will help her reach the required threshold. On Monday, July 22, just a day after Biden’s announcement, Harris had shored up enough non-binding delegate support to become her party’s presumptive nominee. Other top Democrats such as California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer had been touted as potential replacements for Biden.
She could be the first woman of color to be nominated for the role, being of African-American and South Asian heritage. Oakland-born Harris previously served as California’s attorney general. She has backed liberal policies such as a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, Cannabis legalization, gun control and amnesty for illegal immigrants in certain circumstances.
