US Increases Air Power To Combat Evolving Threats

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – The U.S. air power in Japan is about to ramp-up as threats from Russia, China, and North Korea seemingly rise. The scheme will involve the deployment of advanced fighter jets to a trio of critical bases across the East Asian country.

Last Wednesday, the American Defense Department announced its blueprint to replace Kadena Air Base’s current crop of 48 F-15C/D Eagle jets with 36 fresh F-15EX Eagle II jets as part of a wider mission to keep up the rotational use of fourth- and fifth-generation tactical aircraft in the Indo-Pacific.

It comes as China attempts to build up its navy and military prowess in the region, especially as a counter to America and its allies. Many experts speculate that Chinese President Xi Jinping could launch an invasion of Taiwan. There is also the added context of a renewed partnership between North Korea and Russia, who recently signed a new military partnership deal on the back of their tightening of ties throughout the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Okinawa-based Kadena Air Base is a key pillar of U.S. air power in the area, particularly due to its closeness to the so-called “Keystone of the Pacific,” the island of Taiwan. Despite the potential military importance of these measures, Kadena Mayor Hiroshi Toyama has said he fears the impact of noise pollution from air activity, which he said he would be monitoring “closely”.

Along with Kadena, Misawa Air Base will receive 48 F-35A Lightning IIs in place of their current 36 F-16 Fighting Falcons. These new jets will help the U.S. and its allies in the region deter Chinese and Russian naval power. Misawa in particular is strategically located close to the Tsugaru Strait, a critical waterway which links the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Japan. This means it is well placed to observe and respond to hostile actions.

An unconfirmed number of F-35B Lightning II jets are also set to be modified at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. The Pentagon’s latest plans to modernize its Japanese presence have racked up a more than $10 billion bill, amid wider global tensions.
