A Music Giant Is Gone

Clive Davis died Monday, June 22, 2026, at his home in Manhattan. He was 94. His family confirmed the death to The New York Times. No official cause of death was announced, though his spokesperson said he had been admitted to a local hospital the previous Friday with an upper respiratory infection before returning home. He lived a full life right up to the end, remaining active in the music world well into his 90s.

Davis was born April 4, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a law degree from Harvard and joined Columbia Records as general counsel before rising fast. By 1967, at just 35 years old with no prior music experience, he became president of Columbia Records. What he did next changed American music forever. He shifted the label away from classical and Broadway recordings and steered it straight into rock and roll.

The Careers He Built

Davis personally signed Janis Joplin’s band to Columbia Records in 1967. From there, he kept building — adding Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Santana, Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Pink Floyd to the roster. He also strengthened the careers of Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, and Simon and Garfunkel. His ear for talent was almost unmatched. He didn’t just sign artists — he helped shape how they sounded and how they connected with audiences.

After leaving Columbia in 1973, Davis founded Arista Records in 1974. That label became home to Barry Manilow and later a teenage singer named Whitney Houston. Davis mentored Houston closely, helping her develop her phrasing and her understanding of how to deliver a song. That partnership turned her into one of the best-selling artists of all time. Davis later said her 2012 death, at age 48, hit him deeply and personally.

A Legacy That Spans Generations

Davis went on to found J Records in 2000 and was later named Chief Creative Officer of Sony Music Entertainment worldwide. He won five Grammy Awards over his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 as a non-performer — one of the rare executives to earn that honor. He also founded Arista Nashville in 1988, helping launch the careers of country stars Alan Jackson and Brooks and Dunn.

Few people in any industry leave behind a body of work as wide and lasting as Clive Davis built. He came from nothing — losing both parents at a young age — and climbed to the top of one of the most competitive businesses in the world through sheer instinct and hard work. The artists he believed in went on to define American culture for generations. That kind of track record doesn’t happen by accident. It takes someone who genuinely loves music and understands what moves people. Clive Davis was that person, and the industry will feel his absence for a long time.
