Workers Begin Dismantling Baltimore Bridge

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Employees have managed to move the initial 200-ton chunk of the collapsed bridge in Baltimore, authorities said on Sunday, March 31st. The bridge, part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, was destroyed when the Dali container ship had a power failure and crashed into it last Tuesday, causing the demise of six people. Using blow torches and demolition equipment staff sliced through the bridge’s upper parts. The initiative is geared toward clearing the harbor of steel wreckage and finding the remains of victims’ bodies and reopening the important shipping lane.

Kimberly Reaves, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard, told the press that the first lift of rubble was made on Saturday after the top portion of a northern section of the Key Bridge was completed. She added that the removed part of the destroyed bridge, weighing some 200 tons, was set to move to a barge to be disposed of at a chosen land-based debris site.

Attempts to recover the bodies of the victims, who were overwhelmingly Latino migrants, is a priority. A mere two of the six fatalities have been found and identified. The tragic incident has not just local communities but also halted shipping activities in and out of Baltimore, a critical port hub in the United States.

Governor Moore stressed the need to locate the remains of people who had been killed in the accident before arranging the reopening of shipping in the area. He also told MSNBC that the incident continued to impact people across the country, including economically. U.S. Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg claims a meticulous approach is needed for the safe disposal of the wreckage and the port’s future reopening. He told CBS’s “Face the Nation” that there was no fixed timeline for the port to be up and running again, reopening of the port.”

The dramatic collision unfolded after the Dali cargo boat suffered a power failure, causing its pilot to release a Mayday call. The bridge collapsed shortly following the crash, causing instant havoc to road and maritime traffic alike. US President Joe Biden is set to visit the disaster site this coming Friday.
