(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Ex-CIA Director John Brennan has sparked controversy after claiming that key national security information could be withheld from former President Donald Trump if he is confirmed as the Republican candidate for the Presidency. Brennan, a longtime critic of the former President, told Fox News that Trump’s federal indictment relating to his handling of classified documents prompted concerns over his possible misuse of sensitive content. Brennan implied that access to classified briefings could therefore be limited to avoid misuse of the information.
The discussion came on the back of a Politico article referring to the etiquette for briefing presidential candidates over classified issues, a situation President Joe Biden intends to continue. Since achieving Presidential office, Biden has allegedly barred Trump from accessing classified information, claiming concerns that Trump could inadvertently disclose sensitive facts. However, critics have mocked this state of affairs, given Biden’s long history of gaffes and public errors.
Trump’s former national security advisor John Bolton, suggested that current legal proceedings offered Biden an easy pretext to outright deny Trump access to any intelligence briefings. Critics complain that this issue highlights a major double standard, especially as Biden also faces serious questions over his handling of classified information. Questions continue to arise over Biden’s son Hunter’s foreign business dealings and their potential national security implications, which Brennan and his fellow intelligence experts appeared less concerned with.
It remains unknown whether or not Trump, like previous presidential candidates, will receive unfettered access to classified briefings. On Tuesday 12th March the U.S. Congress heard that Biden kept classified documents in his home garage so he could use them in an $8 million book deal. However, the report, compiled by former special counsel Robert Hur, concluded that the former President should not face criminal proceedings over the matter. It also found that Biden said he could not recall how the sensitive documents, some of which related to the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, had wound up being stored in his garage.
