(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Former President Donald Trump hinted at a forthcoming shake-up of the Republican National Committee (RNC) when quizzed about its Chair Ronna McDaniel. The frontrunner for the GOP nomination said he believed McDaniel, former chair of the Michigan Republican Party, “did great” running the party in Michigan. However, he complained that she had merely done “OK” during her initial stint at the RNC, with Trump telling Fox News that “some changes” were likely ahead.
Last week The Washington Times reported that the RNC was considering utilizing a credit line amid a $15 million funding shortfall. As of November 30th 2023, the RNC reportedly held around $9 million USD on hand, less than half of the $20 million reported by the Democratic National Committee to the Federal Election Commission that same date. According to figures registered with the Federal Election Commission, between Oct. 2022 and Nov. 2023, the RNC dished out $250,000 on limousines. The DNC spent around $7,000 on the same.
There are claims that McDaniel, who is niece to former US presidential candidate Senator Mitt Romney, has been less than frugal at the helm, with her allegedly overseeing $1.5 million spending on media consultants, private jets, and floral arrangements. Finances aside, McDaniel has already faced criticism after the Republicans’ lackluster performance in 2022’s midterm elections, with GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy also rebuking McDaniel, telling a November 2023 presidential debate that the Republicans were “a party of losers”.
The RNC’s financial woes have been blamed both on anti-Trump and pro-Trump attitudes among donors. Pro-Trump donors have reportedly been hesitant to donate due to claims the RNC has not backed the former President strongly enough, while many large would-be donors are reluctant to offer funding to a Trump Presidential campaign, should he win the nomination. The party continues to attempt to pour cold water on claims it is cash-strapped, having raised $85.2 million in 2023. According to the Washington Examiner, the GOP currently has the worst fundraising numbers since 1993, adjusting for inflation.
