Solar Eclipse Spurs Need for National Guard

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – As the build-up to the total solar eclipse on April 8th begins, U.S. states on the astronomical phenomenon’s visible path are kickstarting preparations. Huge influx of tourists are expected to flock from afar to see the celestial event, which will see the sky turn dark during the daytime. In response to the uptick in visitors, the Oklahoma National Guard is preparing extra support for local authorities, and its 63rd Civil Support Team is to be deployed to Oklahoma’s McCurtain County where some 100,000 visitors are set to turn up.

Lt. Col. Jabonn Flurry, commander of the 63rd CST, claims that the Guard’s work ought to alleviate strain on resources, citing their long-term experience teaming up with local agencies’ positions. The 115-mile-wide totality path above which the moon will obscure the sun, covers a diagonal shape across some 15 states, from Mexico to Maine, and all residents across these regions can expect higher crowds and traffic. Texas officials have instructed residents to stock up on essentials and remain patient should any issues arise.

Aside from traffic concerns, officials have explained potential issues with accessing emergency responders, cell service, and credit card machines due the surge in demand.
As excitement climbs ahead of this rare natural event, public safety reminders have also been issued. Motorists have been told to expect heavy traffic and to exercise vigilance given the likelihood of distracted pedestrians. Drivers have also been reminded to switch their headlights on throughout the eclipse and to not wear custom-made eclipse glasses while driving.

The most recent major solar eclipse that could be witnessed on the ground in the United States took place on August 21st 2017. This so-called “Great American Eclipse” could be seen across wide swathes of the nation, from the West Coast to the East Coast. Total solar eclipses occur about once every 18 months somewhere on our planet, but their paths of totality are often just several tens of miles wide and are thus rarely witnessed by many people.
