(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Senator Rick Scott is urging US Vice President Kamala Harris to oversee the Senate’s forthcoming impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In an open letter to Harris, the Floridian Senator stressed the Vice President’s responsibility when it comes to border issues, given that President Biden appointed her the nation’s “border czar” in 2021.
He said Harris was therefore tasked with cutting migration on the country’s southern border, which required a strategy to handle “the root causes” of increasing undocumented migration flows between Mexico and the US. Chuck Schumer, the Democrat Senate Majority Leader, formerly stated that Senator Patty Murray would preside over the trial, however Scott emphasized Harris’ role, given the scale of the challenge, which he described as a “an ongoing and widespread crisis” with a “flood” of illegal immigration in US states and cities.
Congress voted to impeach Mayorkas by a razor-thin margin of 214 to 213 votes earlier this month. This vote marked the first-ever impeachment of a Cabinet official since the 1870s. The White House has slammed the move as politically motivated and unconstitutional. President Biden even went so far as to claim that “history” will not judge “kindly” Republicans who voted in favor of the trial.
The White House also continues to blame the GOP for the failure to pass legislation to tackle the border crisis. Last week House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed an “insufficient” bill that tied increased funding for assistance on the US border to foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel and Indo-Pacific allies.
Mayorkas’ Senate trial is likely to pique the attention of the nation amid an increasingly tense debate over immigration policies, with more than 6.3 million illegal immigrants having entered the US since 2021. Republicans are unlikely to be successful in their bid to dismiss Mayorkas, given that the Democrats currently hold a majority in the Senate.
Rick Scott previously served as Governor of Florida between 2011 and 2019 and entered office as a Senator from Florida in 2019. He formerly held roles in the healthcare industry, during which he co-founded the Columbia Hospital Corporation, which later merged to become the Columbia/HCA corporation. He is politically conservative and has been active in debates on healthcare, immigration, and fiscal responsibility.
