(PatriotSpotlight.org) – In a unique case involving the allocation of parental responsibilities, Jennifer Crumbley has been charged with involuntary manslaughter accusations related to the assault that occurred on November 30, 2021, at Oxford High School in Michigan.
The prosecution asserts that Crumbley and her husband, James, exhibited extreme carelessness and that their son’s continuing dangerous behavior was evident to them. Ethan Crumbley’s mother was well-informed of her son’s spiraling mental health and social isolation. She also knew that a math assignment featured a gun that looked similar to the one he had used while shooting together at the range.
The Crumbley parents, Jennifer and James, maintain that they were not aware that their son had intended to murder other pupils at Oxford High School in 2021. Prosecutors claim that they allowed Ethan Crumbley easy access to a pistol, disregarded his mental health requirements, and refused to remove him from school on the day of the assault after his violent gun drawings were shown to them.
Since the Crumbleys cannot pay the $500,000 bond, they have been imprisoned for over two years while awaiting trial. The maximum penalty for involuntary manslaughter in Michigan is fifteen years in jail. Trial proceedings have been sluggish due to the large number of persons called to the Oakland County courthouse, located forty miles north of Detroit.
The case of Jennifer and James Crumbley is the first in which parents have been charged in connection with a school shooting in the United States. Defense counsel Shannon Smith said Jennifer Crumbley was not at fault since her son had deceived her.
After viewing a short clip a school security camera recorded the day of the incident, jurors became visibly upset. Smith and Jennifer Crumbley were allegedly “sobbing” during the trial, according to prosecutor Karen McDonald, who said it went against the judge’s order that everyone keep their emotions in check.
In December, 17-year-old Ethan Crumbley received a life sentence after pleading guilty to many charges, including murder and terrorism.
