The incident allegedly left sevenaid workers dead, including individuals from various states such as Australia, Poland, dual American-Canadian citizen and a Palestinian.
Prime Minister Sunak, despite repeatedly stressing Israel’s right to defend itself, stated his major concerns over the incident, stating that Israel must conduct a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. He stressed that it was urgent that the truth be found, explaining that his government “are asking Israel to investigate what happened urgently because clearly there are questions that need to be answered.” Sunak applauded the efforts of the late aid workers, celebrating their dedication to providing aid to Gaza, and said the safety of such workers ought to be allowed to carry on unhindered. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron echoed Sunak’s remarks, urging a full and transparent explanation of what caused the deaths of the humanitarian workers.
Initial reports suggest that the aid workers in question were part of a convoy run by World Central Kitchen, a charity focused on delivering life-saving aid food at the Deir al-Balah warehouse, before several of its members’ demise. The aid staff had been traveling in a pair of armored vehicles displaying the WCK logo when they were struck. Alicia Kearns, the Conservative MP who chairs the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, stressed the need to offer humanitarian groups the assurances of protection for their employees.
