Netflix Showrunner Speaks Out about Cancel Culture Parallels

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – The showrunner for Netflix’s highly anticipated series “3 Body Problem” has drawn attention to what he calls the “undeniable parallels” between a part of the film that depicts China’s Cultural Revolution and the cancel culture that has infected the modern-day West.

Adapted from the Hugo award-winning story by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin, the series focuses on humanity’s preparations for an alien invasion, intertwined with complex themes of interstellar physics.

The show’s opening scene, which portrays a harrowing event from China’s communist revolution, has sparked a huge discussion online. In this part of the film, a physics professor is seen being brutally interrogated and then killed by Red Guards after he refused to abide by communist rules.

While Benioff has clarified that the scene isn’t a form of explicit commentary about cancel culture in the States and Europe, he did acknowledge that there were some incredible similarities between these events in China and modern social trends.

Benioff explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he believes human history moves in “cycles,” adding that there are huge differences between today and the Cultural Revelation, despite there also being some undeniable similarities.

Despite this, he emphasized that the decision to include such scenes wasn’t driven by a desire to make a direct commentary.

Actress Rosalind Chao, who portrays a character in the series, expressed her appreciation for the international scope of the story, adding that telling the story to a global audience is crucial for understanding the complexities of world history.

Chao said that it’s important for there to be an international adaptation of the story, with narrow-mindedness driving her “nuts.” Woo even asked if it was “OK” for her to say it.

The series – which has sparked anger in the Chinese market – has spurred debate among western viewers, including video game developer Mark Kern.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, adding that developers are now being “forced” to attend seminars about equity and diversity, where they are lambasted for their “white privilege.”
