(PatriotSpotlight.org) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is facing mockery and backlash after it shared a tweet hinting that President Joe Biden had not made moves toward gun control. The NAACP chided Biden for focusing on a ban of the Chinese app TikTok while allegedly ignoring gun control.
The tweet in question claimed: “A TikTok ban before gun reform is wild,” suggesting that the Biden administration had homed in on minor issues instead of tackling gun issues. The Daily Blaze reported how several users highlighted that Biden had signed large gun control measures in 2022 in the wake of highly publicized high-profile shooting attacks in both Texas and Buffalo, New York.
People from across the political spectrum slammed the NAACP for its misleading claims. One user quipped in response: “Tweeting before googling is wild,” while another even accused the civil rights group of disseminating misinformation. Others said the tweet was inaccurate in its remarks on current gun control laws. A slew of responses also stressed the need for high-profile organizations to make sure the information they spread via social media is accurate and that claims ought to be fact-checked before posting.
The event raises wider questions about whether information shared via social media can be trusted, even when respected organizations have approved posts. Inaccurate information obviously has the ability to adversely impact political discourse and unduly inflame sensitive debates. The NAACP has not yet published an official statement regarding its now-removed post.
The Baltimore-based group, which was founded in 1909 as a cross-community push to pursue equal rights for African Americans often engages in both legal advocacy and political lobbying. The group faced accusations of antisemitism in 2000 when L, Lee Alcorn, then president of the NAACP’s Dallas branch, slammed Al Gore’s selection of Senator Joe Lieberman for his vice-presidential candidate because the latter was Jewish. Alcorn, who had previously been suspended from the group three times, resigned in the wake of the controversy.
