Magician Admits to Being Paid to Mimic Biden for AI

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – In a bizarre turn of events, a magician from New Orleans has admitted to creating an AI-generated robocall that impersonated US President Joe Biden. The deep fake call told Democrats in New Hampshire not to vote in the state’s presidential primary on January 23. Louisiana-based Paul David Carpenter, famed for his hypnosis feats and other illusions, confessed to NBC News that he created the audio used in the notorious fake call. He alleged that he was paid for the creation by a consultant working for Dean Phillips, a Wild Card candidate for the 2024 Democratic Presidential nomination.

Carpenter offered evidence including text messages, call logs, and payment documentation supporting his story. The illusion artist said that he was hired by Steve Kramer, a consultant allegedly linked to Phillips’s campaign, to employ AI technology to mimic Biden’s voice. Carpenter admitted to making the fraudulent audio but continues to stress that he was not himself involved in its distribution, and was unaware of its later use. He said he had no malicious intent, stressing that he was simply “offered money to do something and I did it.”

Police are currently scrutinizing Carpenter’s account of events, while this row has led the US Government to pursue plans to ban the use of AI-generated voices in robocalls. Carpenter also spoke of the shocking ease with which he created the controversial fake audio, telling the press that it took under 20 minutes to complete, costing him a mere $1. He claims he was paid $150 for the task, as evidenced by alleged Venmo receipts from Kramer and his father, Bruce Kramer.

As of yet, Kramer has not publicly commented on Carpenter’s claims. Meanwhile, Phillips’ campaign has expressed disgust over the matter and denied any knowledge or approval of the fake call. Federal Election Commission records show that major payments have been forwarded to Kramer from the Phillips campaign, suggesting close ties between them. There is currently no evidence officially linking Phillips or his campaign to the creation or dissemination of the AI Biden robocall.
