(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Kia America, Inc. has recalled 427,407 Telluride SUVs over concerns the vehicles could move despite being parked, possibly resulting in collisions, authorities revealed on Tuesday, March 20th. A document released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week explains that the car manufacturer admitted that the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft of the vehicles in question were at risk of not being fully engaged due to alleged improper assembly by suppliers. The NHTSA document detailed how “over time, partial engagement can cause damage to the intermediate shaft splines,” which could cause the car to roll unwanted while parked, if the parking brake was not engaged.
The recall is relevant to vehicles produced in the time slot between January 9th 2019, and October 19th 2023. The vehicles being recalled account for around 1 percent of 2020-2024 Kia Telluride SUVs manufactured throughout this era. The at-risk cars were identified following a thorough review of vehicle and supplier manufacturing records, with the problematic supplier found to have been MOBIS Alabama, LLC, situated in the Georgia city of West Point. Kia has said it is alerting owners of the relevant vehicles via first-class mail and will urge them to visit a Kia dealer where they can receive new software to resolve the issue in their cars. They also said dealers will mend any damaged intermediate shafts in said vehicles.
Kia has said it advises owners of the vehicle to leave their gear shifters in the Park (P) position, and recommended that they engage the EPB before leaving the vehicle. Kia also vowed to refund owners who may have already spent money on resolving the issue in their cars. Around 427,407 Telluride cars with model years 2020-2024 are also said to be impacted. The roomy cars have been popular with American cars since their original release in 2019. In February Toyota was forced to issue a similar recall which meant almost 300,000 of its vehicles were at risk of creeping forward while being parked.
