(PatriotSpotlight.org) – John Kirby, President Joe Biden’s current national security spokesman, is poised to assume an expanded role within the White House. Kirby’s new designation will be White House national security communications adviser, coupled with the prestigious title of assistant to the president. While the appointment is yet to be officially confirmed, on Monday an anonymous White House official revealed the alleged details of Kirby’s expanded role to the Reuters news agency.
He joined the White House’s National Security Council as coordinator for strategic communications back in 2022. This role came at the same time as Karine Jean-Pierre’s elevation to White House press secretary, following Jen Psaki’s departure from the role to re-enter journalism. However, The New York Times has hinted at tensions between the official White House spokesperson and Kirby, given how the administration continues to lean on him to publicly address sensitive global security issues and the Middle East crisis.
Notably, Kirby’s new job covers the responsibilities of a previously vacant role in NSC’s structure. As part of his new duties Kirby will lead a separate team who will head-up the dissemination of information across various governmental agencies as the administration attempts to enhance communication across various national security roles. It comes at a time of heightened tension between the US and its allies with hostile actors in both the Middle East and East Asia.
Kirby is a retired US Navy admiral, and has been praised for bringing years of relevant experience to his role, having been required to approach complex foreign policy issues throughout both his political and military career. His erstwhile stints as chief spokesperson for both the Pentagon and the State Department under Barack Obama’s presidency also suggests his ability to deftly navigate sensitive security matters as both the media and the general public look on.
Kirby’s extensive history in public-facing national security roles have attracted praise from Biden’s other officials. His frequent presence at White House press briefings signal the administration’s confidence in his communication with journalists.
