(PatriotSpotlight.org) – Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has vowed to spearhead moves to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for “willfully and systematically breaking federal immigration laws and violating his oath of office,” she told One America News on Monday.
She told the conservative media outlet that articles of impeachment would be marked up in the House’s Homeland Security Committee (HSC) during their Tuesday (30th Jan) meeting, with strong support from her Republican colleagues.
Greene, who sits on the Committee on HSC’s Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement, recalled an incident in which two of her constituents were “killed in Texas by a 17-year-old cartel member smuggling illegal aliens.”
She said this prompted her to initiate articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, “for willfully and systematically breaking federal immigration laws and violating his oath of office.”
Taylor-Greene also expressed frustration at the committee’s “Republican majority doing nothing to hold anyone accountable,” for what she described as a “border invasion that’s been happening since 2021.”
On October 31, 2023, Mayorkas told the Senate’s HSC that over 600,000 people had illegally entered the United States, without being stopped by border agents, during the 2023 financial year.
The GOP politician also suggested that her colleagues would be more likely to back the impeachment after voters had contacted them to express displeasure at the failed bid to impeach Mayorkas in November, which resulted in House members voting 209–201 to defer the resolution to the HSC. Eight Republicans joined all Democrat representatives in voting down the impeachment attempt.
“We have the votes to pass it on the House floor. I know for a fact we have the votes in committee. I know House Republicans on the HSC are ready to vote to impeach Secretary Mayorkas.”
On Monday evening she claimed in an interview with Fox News that no Democrats will back her impeachment plans.
