(PatriotSpotlight.org) – On Wednesday Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene urged Americans to turn their flags upside down in protest against alleged overreach by the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding hundreds of prosecutions linked to the January 6 Capitol riot, including charges against former President Donald Trump.
Greene’s remarks were made in the wake of a recently surfaced photo revealing that the American flag outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was upside-down on January 17, 2021, eleven days after the infamous 2021 Capitol riot. The inverted flag, traditionally used to signal either serious distress or protest, has been widely used by Trump supporters since the 2020 election, which they allege was “stolen” due to extensive voter fraud. Alito has distanced himself from the episode, claiming that the flying of an upside-down flag was not his idea and that his wife had briefly decided to display it to signal her disapproval of a neighbor’s offensive yard signs.
Writing to the social media platform X formerly known as Twitter, Greene, a Republican from Georgia, explained her chagrin, accusing Democrats of “declaring war” and “weaponizing” the justice system as soon as Biden took office. She also claimed that the DOJ was attempting to jail Trump for life and that the more than 400 people facing prosecution over the riot were being criminalized for simply protesting the election.
Greene ramped up her rhetoric by calling on her followers across the country to display the inverted flag in solidarity with Justice Alito, who Democrats are criticizing for the recently revealed image. Some Republicans have slammed Alito and others for apparently using the flag as part of this protest. When quizzed over her understanding of the official flag code and the meaning she wished to convey with an inverted flag, Greene’s office asked press if they were “being intentionally obtuse?”
Trump, of whom Greene is a steadfast ally, continues to face major legal battles, after being indicted on multiple counts linked to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and obstructing an official proceeding. Trump continues to plead not guilty on all charges, slamming the proceedings as politically motivated. Over 1,424 people have been charged due to their actions ahead of or during the Capitol riot thus far, and more than 500 are facing felony charges for assaulting or interfering with law enforcement.
