Former Republican Lieutenant Governor of Georgia Geoff Duncan has announced that he intends to vote for President Joe Biden in November’s presidential election rather than backing former President Donald Trump.
In an op-ed published on May 6, Duncan commented on how disappointing it was to see so many Republicans “fall in line” with the former president to get the party back in power. Though he acknowledged the validity of concerns about Biden’s age and how fit he is to serve another term, he stressed the need for the GOP to move on from its “Trump era”. He added that he had belonged to the Republican party his whole life unlike the 2024 presidential candidate, and said he would rather vote for a “decent person” he disagrees with than a “criminal” lacking a moral compass.
Duncan encouraged other Republicans to do the same and vote for Biden. As Trump maintains a slight lead over Biden in polls six months before the election, more moderate Republicans are so “offended” by the incumbent president that they see little choice other than to back Trump as a presidential candidate. Former Nikki Haley supporter and prominent GOP fundraiser Eric Levine said he had no option other than to back the former president. Levine has in the past vowed to never back Trump again. New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who also supported Haley and criticized the former president, announced that he would vote for Trump. Sununu argued that a Republican administration should be supported by conservatives regardless, and blamed Biden for “blowing it” for both himself and the Democratic Party.
In 2023 Duncan testified before a grand jury concerning the former president’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. He argued that Trump’s conduct and “character” have disqualified him as a credible presidential candidate. He specifically mentioned the ongoing Hush Money criminal trial and the former president’s “conspiracy theories” following the 2020 election that, he claimed, encouraged the January 6 Capitol Riot. Duncan did, however, acknowledge that Trump is leading over Biden in the polls.
