(PatriotSpotlight.org) – U.S. officials in Vietnam were victims of Havana Syndrome-style attacks before Vice President Kamala Harris’s visit to Hanoi back in 2021. New evidence now hints that Russian actions could be behind said attacks, resulting in concerns over global espionage and the safety of US diplomats abroad.
Reports claim that a “possible anomalous health incident” occurred, which led to Vice President Harris’s trip to the southeast Asian country being delayed. The term “anomalous health incident” is generally used by the US government to refer to Havana Syndrome attacks. Eleven people, including embassy officials and Defense Department workers, claimed a string of separate events prior to Harris’s visit. While some affected personnel were evacuated from the country, Harris decided to push ahead with the planned visit after a temporary delay in Singapore.
Investigative journalism into the matter was spearheaded by the CBS channel’s 60 Minutes program, in conjunction with reporter Christo Grozev. Grozev is known for his efforts to report on Moscow’s links to the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny. A source told the reporters that Vietnamese authorities could have had technology that inadvertently prompted the attacks in order to gather intelligence before Harris’ scheduled trip.
Grozev discovered a document evidencing Russian responsibility for the attacks. The paper, expedited to Russia’s Security Council five months before Harris’s trip, detailed a shipment of exclusive technology to Vietnamese security services, including short-wave equipment capable of scanning human bodies. The equipment also included LRAD, a long-range acoustic technology used for military purposes such as crowd control and perimeter warnings. If used at maximum volume the device’s noise can break human pain thresholds, resulting in major cognitive issues akin to Havana Syndrome’s impacts. Despite this growing evidence, the U.S. government has been cautious in assigning blame, with top officials, Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Greg Edgreen who headed up the military probe into the matter, concerned that publicly naming Moscow as the culprit could be akin to a war declaration.
