(PatriotSpotlight.org) – A young chess Prodigy, Ashwath Kaushik, has smashed records by gaining a Grandmaster win, aged just 8. Kaushik, who was raised in Singapore, has become a legend in the professional chess world, decidedly beating 37-year-old Polish chess champion Jacek Stopa in a tournament at the Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open in Burgdorf, Switzerland.
Chess.com reported that Ashwath’s win was not only secured against his seasoned rival but, in fact, smashed records. The victory makes him the youngest-ever player to manage such a feat in a classical game, as he was aged eight years, six months, and 11 days. Speaking to press about this astounding milestone, Ashwath expressed elation, stating that he felt “really excited and amazing” and that he was proud of how he played the game, especially since he thought he was “worse” during one stretch of the match, before managing to turn around his fortunes.
Ashwath’s path to chess superstar unfolded years ago. He was born in India, but later moved to Singapore alongside his family. Despite his youth, he impressively gained a hefty list of achievements prior his recent record, including a triple gold in the Under-8 category of the 2022 Eastern Asian Youth Championship. This was an especially remarkable feat by Askwath given that he was two years under the upper age limit, at just 6 years old.
With his latest win Ashwath has surely cemented his position as one of the Chess world’s most promising young talents with a bright future ahead of him. The prodigy’s dad, Kaushik Sriram, has explained the moment they realized the enormity of Ashwath’s talent, stating, “Till then we didn’t quite know how he would do at a global level.”
Many child chess prodigies play the game, often as young as 3 or 4 years old. This level of exposure from them enhances their skills by giving them a head start compared to their contemporaries. As internet use has become increasingly widespread, the next generation of chess players now have access thousands, if not millions, of training resources, from video tutorials, software, and game databases, allowing them to learn quicker than ever before.
