California Seeks to Offer Aid to Violent Offenders

(PatriotSpotlight.org) – California now plans to offer free legal aid to illegal immigrants, even if they are convicted of violent crimes. Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer’s AB 2031 bill, nicknamed the ‘One California program,’ is already causing something of a stir by offering to shield illegal immigrants from deportation. Yet, buried further in the bill’s pages is a new measure which would abolish the current restriction on grant funds available to offer legal services for illegal immigrants convicted of violent or serious felonies.

This clause caused outrage after it was mocked by the End Wokeness account on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday evening. This unprecedented move, especially given that under the Sixth Amendment of the American Constitution, U.S. citizens are provided with free legal representation following a criminal charge if they are unable to pay for it otherwise. Non-citizens are not entitled to such a provision, as they are not afforded the protections of the U.S. Constitution.

This news comes as California continues to grapple with a whopping budget deficit of $73 billion and has faced an exodus of over 800,000 people to nearby states, especially following tough Covid-19 restrictions. Over the weekend, X CEO Elon Musk highlighted that the timing of the issue was odd. It is possible that California Democrats are keen to prioritize illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens to score political brownie points.

Conservative commentators complain that the ideology underpinning these policy changes could be linked to a far-left or so-called “woke” narrative which perceives all politics through the simplistic lens of oppressor groups pitted against oppressed groups. Under this framework, any action taken in support of a perceived oppressed group is deemed justified, even if it results in the diversion of limited resources from law-abiding taxpayers to help convicted criminals.

Under recent plans, 700,000 adult illegal aliens from ages 26 to 49 became eligible for health insurance on January 1st 2024. Former President Donald Trump has been fiercely critical of the plans, claiming that California’s politicians “don’t treat their people as well as they treat illegal immigrants”.
