(PatriotSpotlight.org) – An Alameda County District Attorney is preparing for a recall vote in the midst of a wider pushback against progressive prosecutors. After a controversial signature-gathering effort, it has been confirmed that Pamela Price’s opponents have amassed enough legitimate signatures to allow a recall vote this year. The margin was slim but supporters secured around 1,600 more valid signatures than required, enough to move the recall process forward.
Price is currently battling for political survival after a major uptick in crime in Oakland, the biggest city under her jurisdiction. The criminality spike has upset many voters, especially Price’s platform, which advocates for scaling down penalties and keeping police accountable for lethal force. Price’s time in office mirrors that of other Leftist prosecutors such as Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón and ex-San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, who dealt with recall battles after pushing policies geared toward reducing mass incarceration.
California’s series of hard-Left criminal justice reforms, have led to major swings away from tough-on-crime policies towards rehabilitation and reduced criminal punishments. Many suggest these programs encourage crime by reducing incentives not to offend. Governor Gavin Newsom and State Attorney General Rob Bonta have deployed further law enforcement to bolster local anti-crime initiatives. Price’s opponents have gathered major financial support to fuel her recall campaign, with erstwhile District Attorney Nancy O’Malley among their supporters.
California has the highest population and GDP of any US state, but its liberal policy-making, especially in urban areas, has been blamed for fostering crime and social breakdown. Efforts to reduce policing in the wake of the Black Lives Matter campaign’s recent peak after the killing of George Floyd in 2020 have also been held responsible for high crime rates. Price, a self-described civil rights activist, previously ran for Alameda County District Attorney in 2018 and Oakland City Council in 2020. These failed campaigns included hefty pledges for reduced police influence, underscoring just how long-standing her push for policies arguably linked to higher crime rates has been.
